After-Sun Guide

After-Sun Skin Care & Sunburn Relief

Rough day in the Koh Samui sun? A gentle Aloe Vera massage cools the burn, rehydrates dry skin and helps your body repair faster - so day two of your trip isn't spent hiding indoors.

The short answer

Book an Aloe Vera massage the same day you catch the sun, keep the pressure light, and drink water before and after. Skin exposed to Samui's UV, salt water and wind loses moisture fast; cooling and rehydrating within a few hours dramatically cuts down on tightness, redness and peeling later in the week.

Not sure which oil or style suits you best? Compare with our oil vs Thai guide - Aloe Vera falls firmly on the calming, oil-based side of that spectrum.

Why Aloe Vera for sun-damaged skin

Cools and calms

Fresh aloe gel drops surface temperature within seconds. That immediate cooling effect eases the burning sensation and reduces the inflammatory response, so redness settles faster and the skin feels less tight.

Rehydrates

Aloe is over 95% water plus polysaccharides that help the skin hold on to that moisture. Applied with a slow, gentle massage stroke, it works deeper than a quick dab from a bottle at the pool.

Supports repair

Compounds in aloe (including aloin and glucomannan) support the skin's natural repair process. That's why it's the standard after-sun ingredient across Thailand - it's what locals reach for after a long day outdoors.

Kind to sensitive skin

No heavy oils, no fragrance-heavy lotions. That makes an Aloe Vera massage a safe choice for skin already stressed by sun, salt and sunscreen chemicals - and for kids, older guests or anyone with reactive skin.

What to expect in the session

Our 60-minute Aloe Vera massage (฿800) is delivered as a calming, oil-style treatment using pure aloe gel instead of heavier massage oils. You lie down in an air-conditioned room, we cover any bikini/burn lines you'd rather protect, and the therapist works with slow, light effleurage strokes - never firm pressure on burned areas.

Focus areas are typically the tops of the shoulders, upper back, forearms, shins and tops of the feet - wherever the sun landed hardest. If your face caught it too, we can finish with a cool aloe compress rather than direct massage.

If only part of you got burned - say the shoulders - we can pair a short Aloe Vera application there with a full massage on the untouched areas. It's a good option for couples where only one of you overdid the beach day; see our couples massage options.

Home aftercare that actually helps

  • Rehydrate from the inside - two large glasses of water within an hour of the session, and coconut water through the evening.
  • Cool showers only for 24-48 hours; hot water strips more moisture from already-dry skin.
  • Reapply pure aloe gel (fridge-cold works best) every few hours until the redness fades.
  • Loose, breathable clothing - cotton, linen. Skip anything tight over the burn line.
  • Full sun avoidance the next day, or heavy SPF 50+ and a rash vest if you must be out. A second burn on top of the first is the fastest route to peeling.
  • Don't peel or pick flaking skin - let it come off in the shower on its own.

When to skip (or postpone) massage

  • Blistered or open skin - see a pharmacist first; wait until it has closed before booking.
  • Fever, chills or nausea from sunstroke - hydrate, rest, and see a doctor if it doesn't settle.
  • Fresh peeling in mid-flake - wait until the top layer has come off naturally.
  • Deep tissue or firm Thai pressure over sunburned areas - always swap to Aloe Vera or a foot-only session.
  • Alcohol on top of sunburn - dehydrates further and dulls sensation; skip the session that evening.

Frequently asked

Is it safe to get a massage with sunburn?

Only a very gentle, cooling treatment - and only on skin that isn't blistered or peeling. Our Aloe Vera massage uses light, slow strokes and pure aloe gel, which soothes heat rather than aggravating it. Skip any firm, oil, or Thai-style pressure work until the redness has fully calmed down.

How does Aloe Vera help sun-damaged skin?

Aloe Vera cools the surface, reduces redness, and helps trap moisture back into skin that's been dehydrated by sun, salt and wind. It also contains natural compounds that support skin repair - one reason it's the go-to after-sun ingredient across Thailand.

How soon after the beach can I book?

As soon as you're rinsed off and out of your swimwear. The sooner you cool and rehydrate the skin, the less it will tighten and peel later. Late afternoon and early evening slots are ideal - straight from the beach, before dinner.

Can I combine after-sun care with a normal massage?

Yes - a common combo is a short Aloe Vera application on shoulders, back and legs, followed by a gentle head, neck or foot massage that avoids the sun-exposed areas. Tell reception which parts of you caught the sun and we'll adapt.

What if my sunburn is blistering or peeling?

Please skip massage entirely on those areas and see a pharmacist. Blistered skin is an open wound - even aloe gel on top of a massage stroke isn't appropriate. Once it has healed, a soothing Aloe Vera session helps the skin recover faster.
